Why you should really wear computer glasses


The Blue Light


When stepping outdoors into sunlight your eyes get exposed to a variety of visible (and non-visible) light rays that can have a range of effects. About one-third of all visible light is considered „blue" light, known also as High-Energy Visible (HEV) light. Blue light, which is part of the visible light spectrum, is harmful to the cells of the retina, can cause damage to the eyes, and also to accelerate the occurrence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD1). The excessive exposure to blue light can lead to visual fatigue stress and the main source of blue light is the sun. But it is also known that some blue light exposure is essential for a good health. Researchers have shown that high-energy visible light helps memory, elevates mood and boosts alertness.




More Blue Light


We are surrounded by blue lighting: whether at work, in our homes, or in our leisure environment.

Often when we sit in front of the computer, not just for a while, we feel our eyes get dry and tired, the images might get slightly blurry and as result to have a headache or even to feel dizziness. I’m not the only one who spends more than 9 hours a day on devices and if you don’t believe me see the report provided by Digital Trends.

I usually spend 10-14 hours either in front of my computer, my TV, or my phone’s screen so my eyes often feel wearied after staring at those almost all day. I’ve read a lot of tips about protecting eyes by using different methods and techniques. I only use some of them, simply because I chose those that worked for me.


My Skepticism


By the beginning of the last year I wondered if the glasses designed for computer use actually do work. The first time I saw an advertisement about those glasses protecting from the blue light and I’ve watched a video explaining what and how they can help, but usually I’m skeptical about such promising claims. As per the statement from the video, the goggles with a special protective layer are designed for reducing the impact of harmful blue light occurring almost everywhere in our life – from the artificial fluorescent light in the office and the light from the computer screen, to the TV, tablet or any other devices with LED displays at home.If you are not aware, some of the models of the computer glasses are often named gaming glasses.

Later on, I've seen on Internet similar glasses with special coatings by different manufacturers designed to protect the eyes from the emitted Blue Light and many of them seemed pricey, but I still wanted to protect my vision and to check if the glasses really work.Finally  I bought a model with blue light protection, which cost me about 40 Euros and it’s called Blue Block.


I Only Tried These Before



Before I bought my computer glasses I first checked the adjustments of my monitor - frequency, brightness, sharpness. There is also free software to help you with this. Check out Calibrize if you are not sure how to do it yourself.

I also tried the popular f.lux software which makes the light from your computer's display adapt to the time of day, but I didn’t like it as it’s not the same as with using computer glasses. There are people who claim they use it for a long period and they don’t feel the need for buying protecting goggles for display.

I’ve also read some feedbacks on the most popular Gunnar glasses, but what made me to draw back on these was they are over advertised, they are not suitable if the true colors on your monitor are important for you (what is in my case) and they looked to me pretty much the same as my night vision glasses, which I use when driving in fog or when it rains badly. I’ve watched a number of videos about Gunnar, but I didn’t find the glasses they offer suitable for me.



The Results


As mentioned earlier I was skeptic big time about these computer glasses, so I was pleasantly surprised by the observed results from day one when I started using them. Actually-I was not just surprised, I was really amazed.

The advantages I observed for the relatively long period I use the glasses for computer are: less eye strain, less fatigue, no headaches, and no dizziness.

Now after one year of using them I can and I would recommend the computer glasses to everyone, who spends more than 2 hours a day in front of any device, which emits a blue light-a computer screen, mobile device or a TV screen. Students, gamers, bloggers or digital artists.

I still never forget to take a break at least 10-15 minutes for every hour I work with my computer, always when possible, away from the monitor.

I also still use the artificial tear drops, which were recommended by mine GP, few times a day, to protect my eyes as much as possible. The glasses for computer I use just additionally, but I can feel the difference when I don’t wear them.



What Type of Blue Light Blocking Glasses I can’t suggest?


If you decide to give a try and to buy glasses for blocking the blue light there are many brands on the market to choose from. I cannot recommend to you something different than Blue Block , because I haven’t tried it myself. Some types of computer glasses like Blue Block have a special antireflective coating, and others, like Gunnar- a yellow tint designed to increase the contrast on the screen and filter out the unpleasant light spectrums so your eye muscles relax.

There are many websites where you can read opinions and reviews from customers, which can help you also to choose between different brands or even models. To be honest- probably everything over 35-40 Euros will be ok, so don’t focus too much on the brand of the frame, or frame’s color.What really matters are the lenses and their quality.


What Type of Blue Light Blocking Glasses to look For?


What I can suggest to pay attention to is to make sure the glasses you are going to buy are:

  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight
  • With UV 400 protection
  • With HEV coating (for blocking the blue light emissions)
  • Have anti-reflective coating (or AR coating)
  • Scratchproof
  • Unbreakable
  • With zero magnification (or have the correct type of lenses, in case you need them)
  • Have a Warranty

In any case - you must first consult with your doctor ophthalmologist before decide to buy anything.

Do the computer glasses for reducing the Blue Light Work?

 I’m happy with my choice and yes- the computer glasses I bought for reducing the Blue Light work for me.



What Else You can Do for Protecting your Eyes when using Computer, Tablet or Cell phone.


1.Always keep your screen clean;

2.If you are using screen protector - keep your screen protector clean;

3.If you wear glasses or contact lenses keep them clean too;

4.Choose a proper place to sit to avoid a light reflecting on the screen;

5.Make sure the ambient light is set up correctly to reduce the glare from your screen;

6.Ensure your monitor is adjusted properly-brightness, sharpness, color temperature;

8.Keep a comfortable working distance at the computer, as far away as possible;

9.Take regular breaks and maintain the "20-20-20 rule";

10.Blink regularly, as often as possible;

11.Eat suitable foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, or use suitable nutrients to support your Eye Health;

12.Give you Eyes a long Break when this is feasible;


And don’t forget to Get a Comprehensive Eye exam at least once a year.
