Home Remedies for Pilonidal Cysts

Pilonidal Cysts which grows like a response to ingrown hairs or hairs inserted in the skin, are one kind of infection that happens in the area of the buttocks crease.

The reason of pilonidal cysts are still mysterious however it is believed by the experts that they can be caused by the hairs penetrated in the skin. Therefore, the body may consider the hair is the foreign object and the natural reaction from the body against it which subsequently cause the formation of the cyst around the hair. If there is any trauma occupies the buttock area, it may add to the growth of pilonidal cysts as well.

Originally, there is only a tiny, dimple – like stress on the surface of the skin. Nonetheless, when it is infected, the depression might become a swollen mass. It can be filled with fluid or an abscess where pus gathers.

1. Garlic

Garlic is famous for its amazing healing properties as well as antibiotic and antifungal properties, it can used as an effective natural remedy to treat pilonidal cysts. When consumed orally, it can promote immune system function to ward off infections and support the healing process.

  • Take some of garlic cloves and crush them into small pieces.
  • Apply those pieces directly on the affected area
  • You can cover the wound with a gauze and let it sit for several minutes
  • Wash it thoroughly with water.
  • Do this on a daily basis until you notice improvement.
  • Alternatively, consume some garlic cloves orally can be recommended as well. Remember to drink a glass of water as well to prevent the garlic smell from your mouth.
  • Note: Should not apply this method if you have sensitive skin. Do not let the garlic sit on the skin for more than 10 minutes.

2. Tea Tree Oil

Being an essential oil, tea tree oil will be highly effective in reducing pain and inflammation caused by this disease. There are abundant antibacterial, anti – inflammatory as well as antifungal properties which can significantly ward off the infection. Moreover, as the oil may invade deeply into the skin, it may speed up the healing process.

  • You can dilute the essential oil with water (1:10 respectively)
  • Apply it on the wound and let it sit for 5 – 7 minutes.
  • Wash the area with warm water and dab until it dries.
  • Do this for 2 – 3 times on a daily basis.

3. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is effective at soothing relief caused by a pilonidal cyst. Thanks to its incredible healing properties that are able to speed up the healing process faster. In addition, the magnesium sulfate compounds in it is able to help the expulsion of the pus out of the cyst. It also can reduce inflammation and pain caused by this disease.

  • Mix some Epsom salt into a cup of water and stir well till the salt completely dissolves.
  • Dip a cotton swab into the solution and apply it on the affected area for half an hour.
  • Repeat the process once on a daily basis.  
  • Alternatively, you can take a bath with warm water mixed with some Epsom salt.

4. Apple cider vinegar

Thanks to its incredible anti – inflammatory and antibacterial as well as antiseptic properties, apple cider vinegar can be used to effectively reduce pain and soreness caused by pilonidal cysts. Moreover it can prevent further development by the infection triggered by the condition. This remedy also can use for removing blackheads.

  • Add some apple cider vinegar into a glass of lukewarm water
  • Soak a cotton swab into the solution and apply it on the afflicted area until it dries and remove
  • Wash with water thoroughly.
  • Repeat the process for 3 – 4 times a day.

5. Castor Oil

Thanks to its incredible high anti – inflammatory properties that can sooth the pain and reduce the inflammation caused by pilonidal cyst, it can be used effectively to treat this condition.

  • Dip a cotton swab in the warm castor oil
  • Gently apply it on the wound and bandage it
  • Repeat the process for several times a day by using a fresh and clean cotton swab each time and clean bandage as well.

5. Warm Compress

In order to reduce the severity of the wound, you may apply warm compress to the wound which is proven to be very effective. It is said that the warm compress may drain the fluid and pus quickly as well as speed up the healing process. 

  • You need to soak the clean washcloth in the warm water
  • Squeeze out the excessive water and apply it on the affected area for several minutes.
  • Repeat the process for three or four time on a daily basis
